Dream Equation - Classic Post from The Plainclothes Clown

The following comes from November 9, 2004.

I had a weird dream this morning. I dreamed I was writing an algebraic expression on a blackboard.

This is the expression:

((x * dumb) + smart)

where x represents the probability of a desired effect occurring through blind luck alone, without human intervention, smart represents the influence on the final probability of human intelligence, and dumb representing the influence of human stupidity on the desired outcome.

This can be simplified to:

(x * dumb)   smart
---------- + -----
   dumb      dumb

In the first part, the dumb above and below the line cancel each other out, leaving just x behind, thus:

x + -----

Now, in an equation, where y represents the final (and greatly desired) outcome, the expression looks like:

y = x + -----

Suddenly, I realised what this equation means. As dumb tends towards infinity, the smart / dumb part of that equation tends towards zero.

What this means is that, no matter how smart you are, against the entire weight of human stupidity none of your smarts are going to make a blind bit of difference.

All you can hope for is that events happen the way you want through sheer blind luck, is all.

I'm calling this Alexander's Theorem.

I had a number of dreams this morning. The two main ones are listed below.

I dreamed that I could phase through walls, floors, ceilings like Shadowcat - and that there was this copper (looking somewhat like the late John Thaw!) who was hell bent on nicking me and fitting me up for the crimes I did not commit. Never mind the crimes I did commit.

Then I had a heartbreaking dream. I dreamed that the flying elephant Dumbo had grown up, grown big, could still fly, but somehow had lost the will to live. The mouse in his hat had long died so his hat contained a little Timothy Mouse fith fath plushie peeking out of the brim, and of course his little feather because Dumbo needs to hold the feather in his trunk to fly.

But this grown up Dumbo had grown tired of all the flying around, because he'd played with all the toys on the shelf a thousand times already - and now, all he wanted to do was just cover himself in this massive blanket and sleep tucked under his now stupendously massive ears. And all I wanted to do was just hug him as the life drained out of his eyes.
