How Necessary Is Evil?
This question incorporates other questions such as: Is Evil Sometimes Necessary? and Does Evil Serve A Purpose?
The above question could be rephrased, further, What purpose does Evil serve in a society predicated on the assumption that Good is the default state of being?
Also, "evil" for the purpose of this discussion is the version of the word which carries with it the meaning of transgression; of willing violation of taboos set up by a society with the aim of maintaining the social order: the assumption that society is inherently "good."
The idea that one's own society is inherently "good" is an issue to be discussed elsewhere - the previous question, Why Be Good?, covers part of this discussion.
